About

Timothy David Snyder (born August 18, 1969) is an American historian and author specializing in the history of Central and Eastern Europe, the Soviet Union, and the Holocaust. He is currently the Richard C. Levin Professor of History at Yale University and a permanent fellow at the Institute for Human Sciences in Vienna.

Education & Academic Career

Education: Snyder graduated from Brown University in 1991 with a bachelor's degree in history and political science. He earned his Doctor of Philosophy (D.Phil.) in modern history from Oxford University in 1997, where he studied as a Marshall Scholar.

Academic Roles: Before joining Yale, he held fellowships and teaching positions at institutions such as Harvard University, the Paris Institute of Political Studies (Sciences Po), and the University of Warsaw.

Major Works & Scholarship

Snyder has written several internationally acclaimed books that analyze totalitarianism, nationalism, and the fragility of democracy:

Bloodlands: Europe Between Hitler and Stalin (2010): A landmark history focusing on the area of Central and Eastern Europe where both Nazi and Soviet regimes murdered approximately 14 million innocent civilians between 1933 and 1945. The book won numerous international awards and has been translated into dozens of languages.

Black Earth: The Holocaust as History and Warning (2015): Examines the conditions that allowed the Holocaust to occur, warning that similar geopolitical vulnerabilities could reemerge.

On Tyranny: Twenty Lessons from the Twentieth Century (2017): A concise, highly influential handbook offering practical lessons on how to recognize and resist authoritarianism, written in the wake of the 2016 U.S. presidential election.

The Road to Unfreedom: Russia, Europe, America (2018): Analyzes the rise of authoritarian politics in Russia and the ideological influences shaping modern democratic backsliding in the West.

On Freedom (2024): Explores the philosophical and political dimensions of true freedom, arguing that liberty requires collective institutions and active civic responsibility.

Public Intellectual & Commentary

Beyond his academic research, Snyder is a prominent public intellectual. Following the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, he became one of the world's most visible commentators on the conflict, providing historical context, lecturing widely on Ukrainian history (including a popular Yale lecture series), and raising funds for humanitarian and medical aid in Ukraine.
